Contenders, Pretenders and Surprises in the first Coach’s Poll

August is back, camps are starting up and the early morning chill is setting for the oncoming fall season. It must be time for some collegiate football, right? Close. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Coach Speak season! This is the time of year where phrases such as, “everyone is undefeated in August” or “rankings don’t mean anything” and “we think we’ve got just as good of a shot as anyone” conquer any logical argument. In tandem with coaching statutes such as these, this time of year also welcomes the first USA Today top 25 Coach’s poll, which was released Thursday. Though coaches hate them, preseason rankings really do matter, because contained in that top 25 are about the ten teams who have a legitimate shot at a BCS National Championship. In fact, only five teams not ranked in the preseason top 25 have gone on to win the title.
